“Write your secrets in the sand and trust them with a mermaid.” — Unknown
There is something fabulously relaxing to be next to the sea. I rented a 2 bedroom bungalow in Galveston for the long 4th of July weekend just a few blocks away from the beach. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it’s absolutely adorable, just the perfect size for myself and my daughters small family.
Despite the rainy 4th of July afternoon arrival the beach inspired bungalow was a haven from the storm. The fully equipped kitchen makes it easy to whip together beachy snacks and cooking up relaxing family meals.
Although there are gads of restaurant menus tucked inside the notebook the hostess Kathy left for guests on the kitchen counter, I much prefer to cook in. In that spirit we ran out to the grocery store, just a few miles down the road, and picked up supplies for the weekend. Ok – to be honest, maybe a bit more than that. We bought A LOT. Let’s just agree no one will starve.
After settling in, the rain began to slowly let up giving way to a damp early evening in which to enjoy the holiday parade and fireworks.
There’s something wonderful starting the day off with a cup of coffee on the porch easing into the day before making breakfast for my best girl.
After breakfast we got ourselves together and headed out to visit the old cemetery we saw coming in. My daughter has always had a fascination with old historical cemeteries. The Old City Cemetary dates back to the 1800s with quite a few macabre stories.
The Strand – A Sweet Street
If you have a love for salt water taffy then head to La King’s Confectionary. This shop is a child’s delightful, yummy haven of goodness. If you time it right you’ll get to watch taffy being pulled.
A few doors down is another shop filled with yumminess, the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. The rich scent of buttery caramel wafted across the room, it’s fingers magically teasing our noses pulling us across the threshold towards the master candy maker stirring the large pot of golden caramel.
It was like a magical street of candy making in the middle of an island. We left the strand with one large plain caramel apple, a bag of taffy, two sticks of pretty rock candy, a few pieces of salted caramel and a bag of home made hog biscuits for Mr. Abraham and his friend, Ms. Lilah.
By then the temperature had soared and Miss R was ready for the beach. We headed back to the bungalow, grabbed our beach stuff and walked to the beach. It was time to hunt for shells and play in the waves.
Sending you love and happiness.

This looks AMAZING! Now I want to visit Galveston! Your granddaughter is adorable, and this looks like the perfect vacation. How absolutely perfect. ♥
Thank you…I think she’s a keeper. 🥰 and Galveston is family friendly with lots to do. We always have a blast down there.
Looks like you all had a great time! I rented an apartment in Budva recently while traveling. It is a beach resort town in Montenegro. I have always been very particular about fixing my hair before going anywhere. Trying to live more easy-going now. It was freeing to do beach hair, but pretty easy to get away with in a beach resort town! 😛
Bet you had a blast in Montenegro! Highly recommend letting your hair go while enjoying the beach – makes for a relaxing-no-fuzz holiday. Cheers!
Thanks April. Love that you are creating family experiences! Was Galveston a place you had been before?
Yes, Galveston is just a short drive away. Makes it nice especially with a bouncy grandchild!
