May Travels – Not To Be This Year

What A Waste

“2020. What a waste of a year.”

I heard my son say, sitting in the morning sun on the back deck, coffee cup in hand and dogs chewing on the grass. “Its not,” I automatically said, my go to positive nature dismissing the negativity mindlessly, but then my thoughts went to, “what a waste…” I keep hearing it cycle through my thoughts sensing a bit of truth in his feelings. It’s May first – not even half way through the year yet and it feels forever long.

When I started thinking about the year ahead in January, I had no idea we would be in a global Covid 19 crisis, that the economy would be in the toilet, and job loss would be catastrophic. I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I typically believe in the best, my Polly-Anna-rose-colored-sparkling-clean-glasses always on, slanting towards the positive. But this is even testing my typically good nature focus. And here’s the deal. It’s ok to not feel ok all the time.

Reframe

What a waste… Yes, it can feel like a perfectly good year is passing us by. I get it. But maybe it’s an opportunity too. Maybe it’s how we frame it.

How do we turn this around and focus on making the best of a not very good situation this month? Personally I have fallen away from blogging and posting to social media. I’ve taken a vacay from news, ignoring the continued vomit being spewed across airways. I know I am one of the lucky few that continue to work every day at home. I get up and commute down the hall, turn on my computer and spend the next 9.5 hours online in meetings or drafting work deliverables. I’m blessed. I remind myself that everyday, yet this underlining unhappiness itches at me. I’m tired. I’m in need of a vacation. Even if its from commuting down the hall. I’m in need of a break but I’m having to reframe what that is.

And it starts with gratitude. And our blessings. Because we are blessed.

We have health, groceries delivered in, a backyard to enjoy and three adorable fur babies to keep us entertained. We are so blessed and I’m grateful for the chance to connect virtually. Sooo many blessings to concentrate on for the month ahead.

Adventures

Even though I yearn for the easy days of popping on a plane and landing somewhere new I have to remind myself there are others ways to find adventure. Just like traveling around the world in our own home through television or streaming a favorite app. OK. I know its not the same as getting on a plane but, hey, it’s something.
