Spending Memorial Day Weekend in Alaska

It’s been a year since I moved. Time is slippery and tends to drift quickly away. But one thing that never changes, and I will never forget, is that getting to Alaska from anywhere is a long journey.

I was blessed with a pretty uneventful flight considering the airports were packed with travelers kicking off the summer. The closer I got to Anchorage the more people’s attire morphed from trendy to boots and backpacks.

Eagle River, Alaska

Waking up to birds outside my window I watch the sun above the treetops. Next to me sits an old photo of my son on the nightstand. I’ve stepped through a time capsule in someways, treasuring the memories surrounding me in old pictures throughout the house.

The sense of being home hit me as soon as the plane began its twisting decent into Anchorage.

It’s fascinating and weird that as Ann picks me up I feel like I’ve never been away. The white capped mountains are breathtaking beautiful, the familiar streets and surprisingly warm sunshine welcomes me back. I can hardly believe the afternoon – it feels like summer. I’d prepared for cooler temps.

But Alaska is fickle that way; one minute it’s gray and cold, the next sunny and warm. If you go, which I highly recommend, wear layers. Layers are your friend.

BBQ at Mary’s

I should have taken more pictures but we were too busy catching up. Over the last 20 years we’ve captured some good times frozen in film and digital pictures. Once upon a time there were more of us but, like me, many of our friends have left the state for warmer climates and opportunities.

The brilliant sunshine, fooling us into summer, held out for most of the afternoon. Rain clouds and rolling thunder finally won out, ending the BBQ with rain.

I turn the wipers on, navigating the car back up the hill towards Ann’s.

Yep, this is Alaska; sun and rain, warm and cold.

Alaska gets in your blood. Its like a virus that slips into your bloodstream with no cure. I didn’t think I was infected. I was obviously wrong.

Sending you love and happiness.
